FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CHELSIO’S 10GB ETHERNET PROTOCOL ENGINES SET NEW INTERNET2 IPV6 LAND SPEED RECORDS
10GbE Industry Leader Holds Current Records in All Four LSR Categories
SUNNYVALE, CA, NOVEMBER 14, 2005 – Chelsio Communications, Inc., the established leader in 10-Gigabit Ethernet server adapters and protocol acceleration technology, today announced its products were used to set new Internet2 Land Speed Records (I2-LSR) in both the IPv6 single-stream and IPv6 multi-stream categories. Chelsio’s adapters have been an integral component in setting the current world records in all four categories – for both IPv6 and IPv4 networks and in both single-stream and multi-stream categories.
Chelsio partnered with the University of Tokyo and the WIDE Project to successfully transfer data at a rate of 5.58 Gbps over a distance of 35,755 kilometers traversing the WIDE, IEEAF and JGN2 networks. The team achieved a mark of 167,000 terabit-meters per second (Tb-m/s), which more than doubles the existing record, surpassing it by 131 percent.
The Chelsio 10GbE adapters were critical to enable the team to fine-tune the output rate and achieve the new record. Prior to the new record distance setting effort, the team was also successful in transmitting data at an even higher rate of 5.94 Gbps over 15,461 kilometers in the IPv6 single-stream and multi-stream categories. The IPv6 throughput rate achieved by the Chelsio 10GbE adapters is more than 16 percent faster than the rate of the previous record which used a competitor’s 10GbE adapter.
The superior flexibility of Chelsio’s adapters was a critical factor in enabling us to achieve this new IPv6 land speed record, as well as the IPv4 records we already hold, said Professor Kei Hiraki, professor of the Computer Science Department at the University of Tokyo and leader of the Japanese Data Reservoir project. We were able to finely tune the output rate of the end systems to adapt to the characteristics of the network path. This type of feature is critical for long-distance communications and is currently available only with Chelsio’s 10 gigabit ethernet controllers.
Our 10GbE Protocol Engines are proven once again to be the best performing high speed Ethernet adapters in the world, said Kianoosh Naghshineh, president and CEO of Chelsio. “Our cards are superior for a wide range of high performance computing applications, from low latency-demanding cluster computing applications to ultra-long distance communications.
Chelsio’s products will be showcased in several live demonstrations at the Supercomputing 2005 conference in Seattle this week. Chelsio will be displaying its product at the conference in booth 2130, and will be presenting recent performance benchmarks during the Exhibitor Forum at 11:30am on Thursday November 17.
