CHELSIO BRINGS COPPER TO 10-GIGABIT ETHERNET WITH INDUSTRY’S FIRST SERVER ADAPTER BASED ON 10GBASE-CX4 STANDARD

CX4 Solution Dramatically Reduces Cost of 10Gb Ethernet In Clustering and Data Center Applications

PITTSBURGH, PA, NOVEMBER 9, 2004 – Chelsio Communications, Inc., the established leader in 10-Gigabit Ethernet server adapters and protocol acceleration technology, today announced the industry’s first 10Gb Ethernet server adapter using 10GBASE-CX4, enabling the deployment of lower-cost and lower-latency copper alternatives to fiber-based 10Gb Ethernet in data center and high performance computing cluster applications.

“Chelsio is the only supplier today shipping 10Gbps Ethernet adapters with full TCP/IP offload and iSCSI acceleration, and we are now the first to offer 10GBASE-CX4 support,” said Kianoosh Naghshineh, president and CEO of Chelsio. “Together with our switch partners we are delivering the performance gains of 10Gb Ethernet to the data center at affordable prices.”

The T110-CX 10GbE Protocol Engine dramatically improves application performance by offloading processor-intensive network and storage protocol stacks from overburdened processors, returning processing cycles to the application to enhance overall system performance. With an application-to-application latency of less than 10 microseconds, the CX4 interconnect enables 10Gb Ethernet to be deployed in a wider range of data center and grid computing applications in the enterprise ? and the ubiquitous Ethernet technology lowers the total cost of ownership by leveraging existing resources, such as applications and management tools, and IT networking expertise.

“Chelsio has demonstrated superior performance and stability with their T110 10Gb Ethernet adapters with TCP/IP offload,” said Akira Hattori, senior vice president at Fujitsu Labs of America. “Fujitsu’s CX4 switch and Chelsio’s CX4 adapter are enabling a new interconnect solution for low-latency cluster and data center applications at a significantly lower cost than fiber-based alternatives.”

The Chelsio and Fujitsu CX4 solution has been independently verified by Veritest, Inc. to deliver the world’s lowest latency ? less than 10 microseconds ? using Ethernet technology. Lower latency enables quicker access to data, improving the performance of typical data center applications such as NFS. Interoperability and performance demonstrations will be featured at the SC2004 conference in Pittsburgh, PA this week. Chelsio is in booth #1755, and Fujitsu is in booth #1323.

The Chelsio T110-CX Protocol Engine is available today, and is priced under $2,500 in 100-unit quantities direct to OEMs.

About 10GBASE-CX4

The 10GBASE-CX4 802.3ak standard, ratified by the IEEE in February, provides a low-cost alternative to fiber-based 10Gb Ethernet in data center and cluster applications. This standard enables the use of four-pair Infiniband electrical cabling instead of fiber optical for short reach, rack-to-rack connections up to 15 meters. Native CX4 end-nodes and switches can reduce the cost of 10Gb Ethernet by thousands of dollars in server racks and the data center, compared to optical interconnects.
